Career Counseling Department

Planning your future can be somewhat overwhelming at first. Making a solid plan of action, based on knowledge of your abilities, interests, acquired skills, and desired life-style can aid you to select the appropriate path of training to help you attain your career and life's goals. The career guidance information available through the counseling office at the Bismarck Technical Center is aimed at helping students make sound decisions and realistic plans for their futures, and are intended to be supplemental to those guidance and counseling services available to students at their high school of origin.

At the beginning of the school year, "Team Building" activities take place in all high school classes at the Tech Center. These activities are intended to be "ice-breakers" for students to meet and interact with their new classmates and the counselor. The competition between classes adds to the fun of learning to work in a cooperative effort toward a common goal.

During the first semester, all high school classes are given classroom presentations concerning the "Career Outlook," a magazine provided, free of charge, by the North Dakota Career Resource Network. Students learn how to access career and educational information, and to understand the use of the 16 Career Clusters when making their career plans for the future.

Near the end of the first semester, students are asked to respond on an anonymous survey, requesting feedback about their experiences at the Tech Center and their plans for the future.

In the second semester, all high school classes receive classroom presentations about "Job Search." This presents students with the information needed to successfully find the career they want. It includes information about resume writing, employment applications, and interview preparation.
